Barcelona takes four days. Catalonia takes the rest.
Which Sagrada Família ticket puts you in the towers. Whether Montserrat is better by cogwheel or cable car. What a Costa Brava boat day costs once lunch is counted. Reviews of every tour you can book from this city.
Sagrada Família, Park Güell, the mountain, the coast.
The four bookings a first Barcelona week is built around. What each costs, and what the travellers who took it say.
01The one everybody booksPark Güell Admission TicketThe monumental zone runs on half-hour slots with a cap on each. Early slots get the terrace before the sun clears the ridge.
02Inside the basilicaSagrada Familia Skip-the-Line Entry Ticket & TourSkip-the-line entry with a guide who explains the columns before the glass does. Late afternoon is when the west windows go red.
03The mountain dayMontserrat Monastery Half Day Experience from BarcelonaHalf a day up the serrated ridge: the monastery, the Black Madonna queue and the paths above the cloister.
04The coast dayGirona & Costa Brava Small-Group Tour with Pickup from BarcelonaGirona’s walled old town in the morning, a Costa Brava cove after lunch, back in the city for dinner.
Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló: which ticket, in what order.
All three run on timed entry and all three sell out in season. What it costs to walk into each, and which one is worth a guide rather than an audio handset.
The city first, then the mountain, the old towns and the coves.
Six starting points inside an hour or two of Plaça de Catalunya: the city itself, a monastery on a sawtooth ridge, a walled town on a river, the cove coast, a Roman amphitheatre over the sea, and a whitewashed seafront down the line.
The mountain, the Dalí museum and a swimmable cove all fit inside a day.
Barcelona is ringed by day trips that leave after breakfast and are back for vermut. Montserrat by cogwheel, Girona’s old town on foot, Figueres for the museum Dalí built himself, or a boat north along the Costa Brava.
The Gothic Quarter is four blocks wide and takes a whole morning to read.
Every Barcelona walk →
A Roman wall in a doorway, a cathedral cloister with geese in it, a square Picasso drank in before he was Picasso. The lanes are free to wander; a guide is what turns them into a story you can follow.

Barri Gòtic, properly walked
The Roman colony is still there in fragments: a stretch of wall behind a bar, columns inside a stairwell, the aqueduct arch beside the cathedral. Without someone pointing, you walk past all of it.

Barcelona has a beach, and a coastline worth leaving it for.
Catamarans out of Port Vell with the skyline behind them, sunset sails with the canvas actually up, and kayaks into the Costa Brava coves where the water goes clear enough to count the rocks.
Every day on the water →What a day out in Barcelona actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. A good number of the best days here come in under dinner for two on Passeig de Gràcia.
Museum and basilica entry, the Gothic Quarter on foot, vermut crawls and the cable car up Montjuïc.
The full days out: Montserrat with a winery, Girona and the Costa Brava, guided Sagrada Família with tower access.
Four Barcelona bookings that will not wait.
Most of this city can be arranged over breakfast on the day. These four run on timed slots, cogwheel timetables and entry caps that take no interest in when your flight lands.
- 01Barcelona in 1 Day: Sagrada Familia, Park Guell,Old Town & PickupEntry is timed to the half hour and capped. The tower lifts are a separate ticket and they go first.
- 02Park Güell Admission TicketThe monumental zone admits a fixed number per slot. Without one you are looking at the mosaics through a fence.
- 03Montserrat Half-Day Tour with Tapas and Gourmet WinesThe cogwheel train and the cable car keep their own timetables, and the last one down the mountain is earlier than you think.
- 04Casa Batlló Entry with Self-Audioguide TourEntry is timed all day and the late slots are the quiet ones, which is exactly why they sell out first.
Three things Barcelona has that nowhere else does.
Old towns and good beaches run the length of this coast. A basilica still under construction after a century, a hillside paved in smashed crockery, and cava cellars tunnelled under a village square do not.

The Sagrada Família
Ground was broken in 1882 and the thing is still a building site, which is the point: the nave columns branch like trees because Gaudí wanted a forest, and the east windows are glazed in blues and greens for morning while the west runs red and orange for the end of the day. Go on a bright afternoon and the interior changes colour while you stand in it.

Park Güell and the trencadís
The estate was meant to be housing and almost nobody bought, so the city inherited a hillside of terraces surfaced in smashed ceramic — offcuts, factory rejects, other people’s dinner plates. The serpentine bench along the main terrace is the longest single run of it, and it is shaped to the human back, which you only notice once you sit down.

The Penedès cava cellars
Forty minutes inland, Sant Sadurní d’Anoia sits on kilometres of tunnel cut into the rock, cool and dark enough that the bottles need nothing but time and a quarter turn. The tour is usually a little train through the cellars and a tasting at the end; the good ones let you see the riddling racks still worked by hand.

When the Eixample hits thirty-three and every terrace is in full sun.
High summer does two things here: the middle of the day is unwalkable, and the whole city is on the beach. Both have the same answer — put the outdoor thing at nine and get under a roof after. Cellars, kitchens, cool stone naves and a dark tablao.
By place — Barcelona and the belt around it
By kind of Barcelona day — basilica, cove, kitchen or cava cellar
Four days in the city, then the mountain, the old town and the coves.
